Psychorealism
"The glorious complexity of the human psyche depicted through the visual medium of art and animation"
The single tool that a "serious" animation film creator can have that the ordinary film makers don't. It's the portraying of human emotions through animated and drawn effects. It can be as simple as a drawing a bulb to represent an idea, to the decay of a person's body to represent his emotional distress.
Chris Landreth can be considered the real father of that movement, special in Ryan , where he intentionally explains to the audience the physical character's defects as there respective emotional issues. Which if I may say is brilliant.
Thinking about it opens up a whole lot of possibilities , no longer are we bound to portraying reality , we can go far past that to create our own view of the emotional universe in a physical environment.
